How My Photography Style Has Changed Over the Years

Uncategorized

When I look back at some of the first sessions I ever photographed, I feel a mix of pride and gratitude—and maybe a little nostalgia too. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a full-time business serving families, professionals, and businesses across Raleigh, Wake Forest, and beyond.

Over the years, my style has evolved in so many ways. And if you’ve followed my work for a while, you’ve probably seen the shift too.

From Posed to Purposeful

In the beginning, I focused a lot on posed images. You know the ones…everyone looking at the camera, smiling perfectly. And while those photos still have their place (especially for grandma’s fridge), I’ve come to value movement and connection even more.

Now, I aim to capture what it felt like, not just what it looked like. That quiet moment between a parent and child. The real laugh during a branding session. The quick glance between newlyweds right before walking into their reception.

Those are the images that hold weight over time.

A Softer, More Natural Look

My editing style has also changed. I used to lean into heavier edits, brighter colors, and more contrast. Today, I gravitate toward soft tones, true-to-life color, and subtle warmth. I want your photos to feel timeless…not trendy.

Raleigh’s golden hour light, especially at places like Dorothea Dix Park or Joyner Park, has taught me to appreciate natural beauty and let the environment do the work.

Letting People Be Themselves

One of the biggest shifts has been in how I work with people. When I started, I thought I had to control everything every pose, every movement, every detail. But the truth is, the magic happens when people feel free to be themselves.

Now, I guide more than I direct. I prompt more than I pose. I leave space for spontaneity, because that’s where real connection lives.

Telling a Fuller Story

Today, my work isn’t just about individual images it’s about storytelling. Whether it’s a branding session for a local small business or a wedding in downtown Raleigh, I approach each session with a storyteller’s mindset.

What’s the full picture? What do you want to remember? What story will these images tell five, ten, twenty years from now?

Always Growing

I’m still growing, still learning, and still pushing myself creatively. And I’m so thankful for the clients, many of whom have become friends, who have trusted me through every season of this journey.

Your stories are what shape my work, and I’m honored every single time I get to help you tell them.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a session, I’d love to help you document this season—whatever it looks like. Whether you’re a long-time client or new around here, I’m so glad you’re part of the story.
