We love you. Truly, we do. We think your family is adorable, your outfits are (usually) spot on, and we’re honored you trust us to capture your memories. But… if we could pull you aside, hand you a coffee, and share a few truths from behind the lens, here’s what your photographer really wants you to know (but is usually too polite to say):
1. Being on time matters. A lot.
We get it..wrangling toddlers, finding shoes, or convincing your husband to change out of his team jersey can be a whole event. But if we’ve scheduled a session at 5:45 for golden hour, that’s not just a random time it’s because that’s when the light is magic. Even being 10 minutes late can cut your session short or mean we’re shooting in harsh light or darkness. Set alarms, pack snacks, bribe who you need to. You’ll thank yourself when you see those glowing images!
2. Your kids aren’t “bad”, we promise.
Please stop apologizing for your toddler running in circles or your baby refusing to smile. We’re not judging, we’re pros at this. Some of our best photos come from kids doing exactly what they want to do. Our job is to capture your family as they are, not perfectly posed mannequins. So relax, let them be a little wild, and we’ll handle the rest.
3. Your husband probably won’t love it. That’s okay.
If we had a dollar for every dad who said, “Do we really need to do this every year?” we’d all have in-home studios. But trust us: he’ll survive, and in the end, he’ll be glad you did it (even if he never admits it). Keep the session short, low-pressure, and maybe promise a post-session reward like pizza or 30 minutes of uninterrupted fantasy football scrolling.
4. Pinterest is for inspiration, not duplication.
We love a good inspo board. It’s helpful to know the vibe you’re going for light and airy, cozy and moody, playful and candid. But please don’t expect to recreate 20 different images from 20 different families, in one 15-minute mini session, with your kids, dog, and grandma. We’ll capture your story, in a way that feels real, not staged.
5. We want you to enjoy this. Really.
The best photos don’t come from forcing smiles or perfectly matched outfits. They come from snuggles, laughter, messy hair, and real moments. So don’t stress about perfection. Your job is to show up, love on your people, and let us do the rest.
