Why Couples Should Do A First Look With Their Photographer

Wedding

Before we dive into why you should consider doing a first look on your wedding day, let’s break down what a first look is. The first look between a couple on their wedding day is the first time they see each other all dressed up and ready for their big day. Usually, it’s just the two, with the photographer and videographer privately off to the side capturing the moment. I find that introverts love this idea because it allows them to be freer with their emotions and not share that intimate moment with everyone at the ceremony. It starts with one having their back turned as the other walks in and taps the other on the shoulder to turn around. As the photographer, I give guidance before this happens so you can spend time together when your moment comes. Here are five reasons that most couples choose to do a first look.

It helps you both feel calmer.

Once you see each other for the first time in your wedding attire, you’ll automatically start feeling calmer and can truly enjoy the ceremony. By having a first look, your photographer can also get better shots of the bride or groom walking down the aisle because they won’t look as nervous.

It frees up more time.

Having a first look means you can get most of your newlywed portraits and traditional family and wedding party photos completed early on. You can, in return, have more time to spend with your guests during cocktail hour, alleviating some of the pressure on the day. You know, the traditional standing in front of your parents and grandparents?

It creates more photo options.

A first look means that you can take photos in various locations, leaving you with even more photos to choose from after the wedding, which is especially helpful once you need to pick the images you would like to print for your home.

You get amazing reaction photos.

When there’s nobody around but the two of you, you have the freedom to express your genuine emotions. This will calm the nerves of the introverts because it allows them to be freer with their emotions, and they don’t have to worry about “all eyes on them.”

You get to share a truly magical moment.

A first look will be one of the first moments you get to share on your wedding day, and the fact that it’s alone makes it even more special. Of course, every moment during your wedding day will be memorable and unique, but there is something about sharing that first look alone that makes it simply magical.
